The main difference between an individual plan and a group plan is the fact that for an individual or family plan one has to submit an application and go through medical underwriting. A process in which the insurance carrier takes into account the applicants medical history, obtaining information from the applicant’s application and or their medical record. Were In a group plan an individual’s health history cannot be a reason for declining coverage. However in a group’s case the group has to be able to prove with documentation that they are a legal business entity.
Individuals and their families have many choices weather to get a PPO (preferred provider organization), HMO (health maintenance organization) POS plan (point of service), HAS (health savings account) and others.
Families can choose high or low deductibles and co pays and pretty much find any plans that meet their needs. For example, some plans do not cover maternity. So if you are a single male or a 50 year old female and not planning on having children you may as well choose one with no maternity since the plans are lower in cost.
Most companies today have in excess of 20 plans they offer. Multiply by 9 to 10 Medical insurance companies and you have several hundred choices.
